In 2026, 57 kapa haka earned their place at Te Matatini o Ngā Taniwha through 13 regional competitions spanning Aotearoa and Te Whenua Moemoeā. Every rōpū that placed in its rohe qualified for the national stage — hosted by Waikato-Tainui under the mantle of the Kīngitanga.
The draw was made on 8 August 2026 at Tūrangawaewae Marae. All 57 kapa are now placed in one of four pools — Te Ihu, Te Haumi, Te Kei and Te Awa — and drawn across the four days of pool competition. The top three from each pool go through to finals day.
